As part of a general push to improve datasets for the territories, and support future mapping efforts, volunteers were invited to edit U.S. Pacific Territories data for the first time ever.
The United States has three distinct territories located in the Pacific Ocean: American Samoa, Guam, and Northern Mariana Islands. Guam is the westernmost inhabited territory of the United States while American Samoa is the southernmost inhabited territory.
A mapping challenge was launched calling for volunteers to edit all the structure types we collect for these areas. While there was some existing data, it was mostly schools and fire stations, and was very out-of-date.
As usual, our volunteers rose to the challenge and collected most of the points from scratch, finishing all the territories in just under a month! Over 28 days, 7 volunteers edited 167 unique points. For additional information on the results of the challenge, check out our summary statistics article.
As always, a huge thanks to our volunteers; we couldn’t do it without you!
