Core descriptions, survey transects, bathymetry, and velocity data for the Sheboygan River mouth and Wildwood Islands complex, 2011-12
February 6, 2025
The Sheboygan River Area of Concern (AOC) in Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, contains the lower 22 kilometers of the Sheboygan River, including the Wildwood Islands complex, and it is the focus of remediation and restoration efforts by federal, state, and local governmental entities. Local hydrogeomorphic data is often used to aid in remediation and restoration project design. This dataset characterizes the hydrogeomorphology of a 7-kilometer reach and includes core descriptions and surveyed channel and island transects, a longitudinal profile of velocity and bathymetry, a comparison of measured and modeled velocity data, and streambed substrate descriptions.

In 2011–13, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) conducted a study of the hydrogeomorphic setting and hydrodynamic conditions of the lower Sheboygan River and island complex within the backwater zone of Lake Michigan. Analyses of historical aerial photographs from 1938–2010 indicated that the Wildwood Islands complex had experienced mainly erosion and what was mainly one island in 1938 had...
