Effect of PFAS Exposure on American Kestrels, Eastern Ecological Science Center, 2024

November 25, 2025

Serum samples were collected from an American Kestrel colony at the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Eastern Ecological Science Center and analyzed for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). The sampling effort was undertaken as part of a Strategic Environmental Research and Development Program (SERDP) funded project (ER22-3388) to study the exposure effect of PFAS on immunomodulation in American Kestrels. Samples were collected in 2 milliliter cryogenic vials, stored at -80 degrees C, shipped to the USGS PFAS analytical laboratory on ice packs, and frozen at -80 degrees C until analysis. At the USGS PFAS analytical laboratory, samples were prepared with a direct injection method and analyzed with a Thermo Fisher Scientific™ Orbitrap Exploris™ 120 high resolution mass spectrometer coupled to a Vanquish Flex liquid chromatograph. This data release documents the sample preparation and analytical method.
