Ohio River sediment, hydrologic characteristics, groundwater levels, water-withdrawal rates, and stable-isotope and related data used to evaluate water sources to a riverbank filtration project in an alluvial aquifer, Louisville, Kentucky, 2002–21

This release presents data from surveys of physical and hydrologic characteristics of the Ohio River streambed and adjacent alluvial aquifer and other related information to document conditions and changes relative to water withdrawals from a series of horizontal, radial collector wells in a riverbank filtration system near Louisville, Kentucky. Surveys were completed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the Louisville Water Company. Data from 2002-2004 include areal hydroacoustic surveys of riverbed depth, streambed sediment hardness and roughness (2002-2004) and streambed sediment descriptions offshore from one of the collector wells (CW1; 2004). Uncorrected gage height data from January 2000 to March 2008 from USGS 03293548 OHIO RIVER AT 2ND STREET BRIDGE AT LOUISVILLE, KY (Gage datum, 407.18 feet above National Geodetic Vertical Datum of 1929) are included as a generalized description of Ohio River stage before April 2008. Data from riverbed surveys in 2008, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2019 include groundwater levels measured from temporary piezometers installed into aquifer sediments below the riverbed and hammer blow counts needed to install piezometers to their completion depth. Riverbed survey data from 2014 represented sites downstream from and not affected by the riverbank filtration system. Data from infiltration testing of the riverbed offshore from collector wells in 2003, 2004, 2013 and 2015 include infiltration rates and seepage flux values. Isotope and related data and spreadsheets used to compute hypothetical mixtures to estimate relative groundwater and surface water contributions to collector wells in 2019 and 2020 are also included. Water-withdrawal rates in this release were furnished by Louisville Water Company and include data collected at 30-minute intervals from collector well CW1 (2005-20) and the combined rate from collector wells CW2, CW3, CW4, and CW5, as measured at the tunnel pumping station (TPS; 2010-2020). Water-withdrawal rates from collector well CW1 and from the TPS are also provided in the data release as daily mean and monthly mean withdrawal rates.
