Sedimentary organic geochemistry data from Escanaba Trough, off the coast of northern California, collected May-June 2022
February 18, 2025
This data release presents organic geochemical data collected from sediments within the Escanaba Trough, a sedimented hydrothermal spreading center within the U.S. EEZ off the coast of Northern CA which contains marine minerals (USGS Field Activity 2022-621-FA). The data includes total organic carbon and total nitrogen content, stable and radioisotopes, compound specific biomarker data, and porewater nutrients which can inform on the total carbon storage, source, and cycling.

Characterizing sedimentary organic carbon in a hydrothermal spreading center, the Escanaba Trough
Sediments in critical marine mineral environments are of wide importance due to their preservation of both marine minerals and organic carbon (OC) stocks. However, OC storage and cycling is often overlooked in mineral system studies. This work characterizes sedimentary OC within the Escanaba Trough, a hydrothermal sulfide system off the coast of northern California. By utilizing ROV...
