Spawning Whitefish and Invasive Mussels (SWIM) project supporting data collected in the Great Lakes, 2024-2025 overwinter physics and chemistry on spawning reefs

April 10, 2026

This dataset records physical (photosynthetically available radiation, currents, wave action, and temperature) and physicochemical (specific conductivity, turbidity, pH, phycocyanin, chlorophyll, and dissolved oxygen) data from sensors moored during the winter season of 2024-2025 at two lake whitefish spawning reefs – Good Harbor Bay in Lake Michigan and Thunder Bay in Lake Huron. The data collection supports the Spawning Whitefish and Invasive Mussels (SWIM. www.glc.org/work/swim) project, which is testing the effects of localized dreissenid mussel control on: physical and chemical habitat; benthic algae; and whitefish habitat use, spawning, egg deposition, and larval emergence. It also records information about sampling locations and operations. The data represent pre-dreissenid mussel control conditions. Similar data collected at the SWIM reefs in growing season 2024 and at Cladophora sentinel transects within Lakes Huron, Michigan, Erie, and Ontario in 2018-2024 are available at: (2018) https://doi.org/10.5066/P9E570JS, (2019) https://doi.org/10.5066/P99O4QXB, (2020) https://doi.org/10.5066/P9O9FSTT, (2021) https://doi:10.5066/P9449EUF, (2022) https://doi.org/10.5066/P13JDUMH, (2023) https://doi.org/10.5066/P13AENJS, and (2024) https://doi.org/10.5066/P1WLGXGZ.
