Walrus Counts Apparent from Aerial Survey Images Collected Near Point Lay, Alaska, September 2024
May 12, 2025
This dataset provides walrus counts in 10 m by 10 m square grid cells randomly selected from a standard set of grid cells established for the study area and that intersected with previously published walrus herd outlines and overlain on aerial survey imagery. Results are provided as geospatial polygons saved in the shapefile format. These data are based on visual interpretation of imagery from aerial surveys by a small uncrewed aerial system (sUAS) operated by the U.S. Geological Survey Alaska Science Center, over large groups of walruses resting onshore near Point Lay, Alaska during September 2024.
