Water Surface Velocities in the Downstream Approach to Peoria Lock, near Peoria, Illinois, During Testing of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent, September 15, 2022
A variety of new technologies are being evaluated to mitigate the spread of invasive carps from the Illinois River to the Great Lakes. In 2022, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, and U.S. Geological Survey undertook a field-scale interagency study to determine the efficacy of an Automated Barge Clearing Deterrent (ABCD) in flushing live fish away from commercial barge vessels entering Peoria Lock on the Illinois River. The ABCD is a forced air manifold system that is placed at the channel bed to create a longitudinal array of bubble plumes.
Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR) staff operated a DJI Phantom 4 Pro v2.0 small uncrewed aerial system (sUAS) during a demonstration of the ABCD on September 15, 2022, which presented an opportunity for applying large scale particle image velocimetry (LSPIV) to the recorded video. A video of the water surface was recorded by a camera on the sUAS, aimed directly downward, during operation of the ABCD. This data release contains both raw and motion-stabilized frames extracted from 30 seconds of this video, a .mat file containing the results of analyzing the stabilized frames using PIVlab v2.59 (Thielicke, 2014; Thielicke and Stamhuis, 2014; Thielicke and Sonntag, 2021), embedded within RIVeR v2.6 (Patalano and others, 2017), and a thumbnail image of surface velocity vectors overlain on a frame of the video.
