USGS Assessment of Water Resources near Hanscom Air Force Base
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) New England Water Science Center is expanding its scientific investigation to better understand the water resources at, and in the vicinity of, Hanscom Air Force Base (AFB) and the potential impacts from historical base operations and other sources.
Located predominantly in Bedford, Massachusetts, Hanscom AFB was established in 1942 and spans 1,120 acres.
In cooperation with Hanscom AFB, the USGS is monitoring the surface water and groundwater of the area, seeking to characterize the structure of the groundwater and surface water system, and analyzing sediment samples. This work will provide a comprehensive picture as to potential water resource impacts in the upper Shawsheen River watershed.
Continuous streamflow and groundwater level data will be collected at multiple locations in and around the base. The data being collected will be available on the New England Water Science Center website. All sites will have water quality and sediment data collected and analyzed. All collected data will be available to the public after quality assurance is complete.
For more information, contact the USGS project leads and Hanscom AFB Remedial Project Manager (RPM).
