Something Fishy from the Western Fisheries Research Center - Winter 2025
This is the Winter 2025 edition of USGS Western Fisheries Research Center newsletter, "Something Fishy!" Here we share gratitude to our partners, highlight our collaborations in the Yakima Basin, give updates on an exciting new aquatic disease surveillance tool, investigate habitat conditions in the Upper Skagit River, and commemorate a seasoned scientist on his impactful herring work.
Director's Message: To All of Our Partners, Thank You!
As we near the end of another year I wanted to take this opportunity to say thank you.
Collaborative Conservation: Working Toward Safe Salmon Passage with Yakama Nation
As juvenile salmon migrate out to the ocean, they face many threats. To improve their survival, the USGS Western Fisheries Research Center (WFRC) partners with the Yakama Nation to reduce predation and ensure safer passage.
Recent Accomplishments: The Skagit
The WFRC has worked with Seattle City Light to investigate ecosystem conditions associated with three hydroelectric dams on the upper Skagit River in Whatcom County, northern Washington, asking how habitat availability and productivity may influence fish populations.
In the News: Herring Featured by Sitka Science Center
USGS Western Fisheries Research Center scientist, Paul Hershberger, was featured in a Sitka Science Center news article highlighting his work with Pacific Herring.
