Basic workflow of the hierarchical Targeted Annual Warning System (TAWS) for greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) across the western United States. The top of the chart represents data input and model output. Black-outlined boxes represent data sources, blue-filled ovals represent statistical models, and blue-filled rectangles represent spatial scales relevant to each stage of the evaluation process. Yellow parallelograms represent annual thresholds and signals, pink parallelograms represent multi-year assessments of thresholds and signals, and the brown parallelograms indicate a temporal threshold has been crossed. The evaluation process stops if any rule along the sequence is not met (indicated by red hexagons labeled ‘stop’).
