Capitol Reef - a view along the strike valley of the Waterpocket Fold
Detailed Description
This view is looking south along the strike valley of the Waterpocket Fold from the top of a sandstone outcrop within the Morrison Formation (Jurassic age) along the Notom-Bullfrog Road. A forest of junipers and pinyon pines thrives on soil formed on the ancient volcanic ash-rich sandy sediments of the Morrison Formation. The ridge of sandstone on the left is the Dakota Sandstone (Upper Cretaceous age). The white hogback ridge on the distant right consists of Navajo Sandstone (Jurassic age)(Morris and others, 2000).
