Capitol Reef - steeply-dipping, massive sandstone beds

Steeply-dipping, massive sandstone beds of the Navajo Sandstone forms a hogback ridge that line the west flank of Halls Creek Valley. In the foreground are boulders of Jurassic-age cherty conglomerate from the Morrison Formation. The Morrison Formation caps the ridge at Halls Creek Overlook on the east side of Halls Creek Valley in the southern end of Capitol Reef National Park. The distant flat-lying rimrock of the Wingate Sandstone (west of the Waterpocket Fold) are part of the southern Circle Cliffs in Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.
