Cedar Creek Valley

View of outcrops Pierre Shale (gray) overlain by orange and red beds of the Fox Hills Formation along the valley of Cedar Creek near Redshirt, South Dakota.  These Late Cretaceous marine sedimentary formations underlie the grassy lower hillsides, whereas the nutrient-poor sediments of the overlying White River beds erode into badlands (on the distant side of the valley).
