Characterization of Change in Tree Cover State and Condition over the Conterminous United States

Detailed Description

Scientists at EROS use Landsat data to monitor and map land cover across the United States. In a recent study, more than 30 years of annual land cover datasets were assessed to better understand the types and patterns of disturbance-related tree cover loss and change. The findings revealed that smaller disturbances, such as harvest thinning and low severity wildfires, were previously underreported. With improved data and analysis techniques, scientists can now detect more subtle changes in forest cover. This information empowers land managers and policymakers to refine forest management practices across the diverse landscapes in the United States.
