Colorado National Monument - Rim Rock Drive
Detailed Description
This view is looking down on the Rim Rock Drive-the main route through the national monument. This view shows the massive cliffs of the Wingate Sandstone above the red, shaly slopes of the underlying Chinle Formation. Gray Proterozoic rocks are exposed inside the loop in the road and along the stream bed. The very cap of the cliff consists of another Lower Jurassic-age sandstone called the Kayenta Formation.
