Detailed Description

~ Mile 178: Vulcan's Anvil, a large outcrop of basalt located near the middle of the Colorado River, is thought to be a remnant of a volcanic plug of Quaternary age. In the last million years, lava from a series of volcanic eruptions on the canyon rim and in the canyon has poured into the canyon, temporarily damming the river.
