Downy Woodpecker

Detailed Description

Downy woodpeckers are commonly found in a residential area, woodlands, river groves, orchards, and parks throughout South Dakota. They are small-sized, with short stubby bill and black spots on the white outer feathers of the tail. Mostly they feed on insects, however, they also eat seeds and berries. They forage at any level of vegetation, live in the cavity of a tree. They are the smallest Woodpecker in North America. Because of their small size, they can climb small branches and twigs while looking for food.
