El Malpais - the Narrows Rim Trail

Stone cairns mark the path of the Narrows Rim Trail across a rugged surface of Dakota Sandstone. The trail passes through forests of pinyon pine, juniper, and Ponderosa pine with a variety of oaks and shrub species. The trail runs through the El Malpais National Conservation Area adjacent to the eastern border of the National Monument (BLM, 2010).
