Detailed Description
These three thumbnail illustrations represent three different data visualizations about USGS research on how wildfire affects the Juneau Icefield, Alaska. The upper left image of the Juneau Icefield represents a viz about where the icefield is located and where scientists collect data. The upper right image is of an ice core and represents what different layers of ice and aerosols in the ice core can tell us. The bottom image of a fire and smoke plume represents data on how air currents can deliver smoke aerosols to different areas.
The visualizations were developed by the USGS Vizlab.

Fire In Ice Data Visualizations Fire In Ice Data Visualizations
Glaciers and ice caps around the world are melting. Deposition of dark aerosols from fire on ice can increase glacier melting. The researchers of this project use ice cores from the Juneau Icefield to show how wildfires in the region are affecting the icefield. Three interactive data visualizations help tell this story.
