Furnace Creek Railroad

Detailed Description

Death Valley Railroad (Number 2) is on display at the Furnace Creek Museum. This narrow gauge was built in 1914 to haul Borax from historic mines in Ryan, California to a rail intersection about 20 miles away at Death Valley Junction. The railroad ceased regular operation in 1928 after the opening of the large Borax mine near Boron California. After a failed attempt to use the line for tourists the railroad was finally torn up in 1931 (Gower, 1969).
