Glen Canyon - view of Lake Powell's south shore
Detailed Description
View of Lake Powell's south shore from the Ferry route between Wahweap Marina (near Page, Arizona) and Rainbow Bridge National Monument in Utah. The shorelines are Navajo Sandstone. From here, one can travel up the flooded canyon to Rainbow Bridge National Monument. Navajo Mountain is the dome-shaped mountain the distance, located on the Navajo Reservation in northern Arizona. Navajo Mountain formed when molten magma intruded and pushed up older sedimentary formations. The magma cooled and hardened beneath the surface, forming an igneous body called a laccolith. Other mountain ranges in the region around Glen Canyon National Recreation Area that formed in a similar manner include the Henry Mountains and Abajo Mountains in southern Utah.
