Ice formation on Des Lacs River at Foxholm, ND (USGS streamgage 05116500;
https://waterdata.usgs.gov/nd/nwis/inventory/?site_no=05116500&agency_cd=USGS&) on
December 13, 2010. The weir and river are icing over and small ice spikes are starting to form (estimated
height about 1 foot) downstream from weir. Flow was 10.6 cubic feet per second. The 2010-11 winter
conditions in North Dakota provided the proper environmental setting for the development of some of
Nature’s unique features – ice formations.
