Kīlauea lower East Rift Zone
Detailed Description
From September 4-7, the Unmanned Aircraft Systems flew several missions documenting changes within the fissure 8 cinder cone. On September 4, lava erupted from an opening on the surface of the flow, to build a small cone. Lava flowed onto the floor but did not flow outside the walls of the cone. On September 5, gas bursts briefly lifted a cap over a small opening on the surface of the flow. On September 6, a small amount of incandescence had been visible overnight but during daylight hours, all that was observed was fuming. On September 7, activity was limited to fuming and a slight deflation on the surface of a lava flow near the center of fissure 8.
