Lake Mead - construction of Hoover Dam
Detailed Description
Construction of Hoover Dam began in March 1931. The dam was originally named Boulder Canyon Dam, but the name was changed to honor President Herbert Hoover. The completed dam was officially dedicated on September 30, 1935 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. This view shows the dedication memorial on the Nevada side of the dam near the Visitor Center. The construction of the dam cost about 165 million dollars (Depression Era dollars) (U.S. Bureau of Reclamation, 1941).
