Lake Mead - gold mines

Detailed Description

This view shows mine tailings from gold mines in Eldorado Canyon near Nelson, Nevada. The gold mines in the Eldorado Mountains were highly productive. The Techatticup Mine yielded several million dollars of gold. The mine opened in 1861 and was operated until 1942 (Tingley and others, 2001). The airplane crash in this image is a practical joke that is one of the highlights of the mostly abandoned mining settlement at Nelson, Nevada.
