Lake Mead - the Katherine Mine.
Detailed Description
This view is looking east toward the eroded mine tailings pile from the Katherine Mine. The southern Black Mountains of Arizona lie in the distance. The Katherine Mine is located 3 miles northeast of the Katherine Landing Marina. Also spelled "Catherine" Mine is some older geologic literature, the underground gold and silver mine opened in 1900, operating mainly between 1900-1904 and 1915-1929. It is no longer operating. Mining has been economically important in the western states since the 1849 gold rush. For this reason, there are many old, abandoned mines that are a challenge for land managers who try to preserve historical relics, protect public safety, and protect the environment.
