Lake Mead - the mouth of Virgin Canyon and the Hiller Mountains

Detailed Description

This zoomed-in view shows the mouth of Virgin Canyon and the Hiller Mountains on the north side (Nevada) side of Lake Mead. The highest peak of the Hiller Mountains on the right is Gold Cross Peak (elevation 3414 feet, or 1041 meters). Dark rocks of the Hiller Mountains and the ridge extending from left to the center of the image are Precambrian-age metamorphic rocks. Beyond this dark ridge, the valley of Hualapai Wash drains into the lake from the left. The green plant in the foreground is Mormon tea (Ephedra viridis) (USDA, [2010d]).
