Lake Mead - Rogers Spring

Detailed Description

Rogers Spring and nearby Blue Point Spring are located along the Rogers Spring Fault. Rogers Spring is a warm spring, having a year-round temperature of about 85 to 86 degrees F. The springs form where groundwater migrating through the subsurface beneath the Muddy Mountains encounter the fault zone. Brittle carbonate rocks (limestone and dolomite) occur on the north side of the fault whereas Early Proterozoic crystalline rocks and muddy basin-fill sediments of the Horse Spring Formation are on the south side of the fault. These muddy sediments act as an impervious barriers to groundwater migration so the groundwater flows to the surface as springs (Page and others, 2006).
