Landers vertical offset

1992 (approx.)

Detailed Description

The Landers earthquake ruptured segments of multiple faults that had previously been mapped as separate structures.  The most dramatic scarp, including a component of vertical as well as horizontal motion, was on the Emerson fault in a remote part of the Mojave desert. Sharp vertical offsets like this one erode quickly over time, leaving behind more gentle features attesting to the existence of the fault and recent earthquake (Photograph: Susan E. Hough, USGS)
