Landsat Collection 2 Generation Timeline

Detailed Description

This graphic displays the timeline of generating Level-1 and Level-2 Landsat products.
Note: Landsat Level-3 Dynamic Surface Water Extent and Fractional Snow Cover Area science products are produced approximately 3 days after the Level-2 products shown here are produced. Landsat Level-3 Burned Area are produced on the 14th and 28th of each month.

Landsat 8 - 9 Collection 2 Level-1 scenes are available for download within 4-6 hours after acquisition.

For Landsat 8 Collection 2 Level-1 scenes it takes approximately 3-10 days to process to a Tier 1 or Tier 2 product while refined Thermal Infrared Sensor (TIRS) instrument line of sight model parameters are applied to the Real-Time scene. Collection 2 Level-2 Surface Reflectance and Surface Temperature products are typically available within 24 hours after a scene has been processed into Tier 1 or Tier 2.

Landsat 9 Collection 2 Level-1 Tier 1 or Tier 2 scenes are delivered within 4-6 hours of acquisition, and a Level-2 Surface Reflectance and Surface Temperature product is available within 3 days.

Landsat 8-9 use NASA's Goddard Earth Observing System Model Version 5 Forward Processing for Instrument Teams (GEOS-5 FP-IT) Atmospheric Assimilation Products for Level-2 product generation.

Please note: Landsat 8-9 scenes are processed to U.S. ARD two to three days after the tiered products are processed to Level-2 science products.

Landsat 7 imaging was suspended on January 19, 2024. Visit the January 19th News to learn more about the current state of the Landsat 7 satellite.
