View of a kiva at Far View Ruins in Mesaverde National Park. Kiva is a Hopi word to describe a ceremonial room. Kivas were used as places to conduct ceremonial rites, similar to the role of churches and community centers in modern society. Kivas were probably used as gathering places for family, community activities, and communication.
