Map showing steady-state head contours, heterogeneity pattern, and area of local-grid refinement for each layer of example problem 2 (modified from Mehl and Hill, 2002 by adding child model 2, wells 1 and 3, the river, the trench, the pit, and the detention basin). Layers 1, 2, and 3 of the parent model are refined by the child models. Particles are backtracked from the wells in the child models to the source areas (the river, the trench, the pit, and detention basin).
