Risks to society
Detailed Description
USGS research on land use, population vulnerability, and evacuation modeling for various natural hazards helps emergency managers to develop realistic plans that will save lives from future extreme events. Pictured here is the Oregon coastal community of Nehalem that is threatened by tsunamis that could strike within minutes. USGS research is helping to identify where at-risk individuals around the Pacific Basin may not have enough time to evacuate before tsunami waves arrive.
