Detailed Description

USGS Mineral Resources Program color by number for the critical mineral graphite.

Behold! The mineral graphite (graf-ite), black areas once colored, found in a rock called pegmatite (peg-ma-tite). Pegmatite is an igneous rock that has LARGE crystals. This sample has large quartz crystals (gray areas once colored, and large alkali feldspar crystals (pink areas once colored). 

Car brakes, machine lubricant, lithium-ion batteries, and pencil "lead" use graphite. Graphite is also used in lightweight armor for people and vehicles, and in high-temperature furnaces for making steel.
