USGS scientist deploys seepage meter

Detailed Description

Did you know that most streams in the United States have groundwater flowing into them at least part of the time? Contribution of groundwater to total streamflow varies widely among streams but can have a significant affect on water quality and (or) volume. In this photo, USGS Research Hydrologist Don Rosenberry is removing a seepage meter from a stream during a 2016 training for USGS scientists, with assistance from Groundwater Specialist Geoff Delin. Scientists can use a seepage meter to measure directly the flow across the sediment-water interface at the bottom of a stream. Learn more about USGS techniques and methods for using seepage meters, or about the history and evolution of seepage meters.
