USGS Storm Words: Inundation

Detailed Description
The USGS has many missions before, during and after a major storm. Here is an explanation of a word we commonly use with our science.
Inundation: Occurs when beach system seaward dunes and the shoreline are completely submerged under the rising storm surge, carrying sand inland and carving breaches into dunes. Smaller breaches often fill with sand in the months following the storm, while larger breaches may become permanent inlets.
