Primary & Secondary Land Cover

LCMAP Collection 1 includes 10 Science Products, offering different perspectives for the study of land change across the country, through time. While each product can be used separately, they are complimentary and inform one another.

The primary and secondary land cover products, provide important information on the most likely land cover class for each pixel. Their associated confidence products record the level of confidence in each classification.

For land cover products, LCMAP defines 8 classes similar to the commonly used Anderson Level 1 schema.

The Primary Land Cover product indicates the most likely land cover class output by the classification algorithm. The Secondary Land Cover product indicates the second most likely land cover class.

Each pixel is assigned primary and secondary land cover classes. The confidence in those assignments is also recorded. The Confidence Products provide useful information for understanding the modeled accuracy of primary and secondary classifications.

It's recommended that users evaluate the usefulness of secondary land cover products in their analysis. The relationship between primary and secondary confidence values can guide this assessment.

For example, an area classified as barren, with a secondary classification of grass & shrubs, reports primary confidence values that are similar to the secondary confidence values. This suggests the region has a mixed vegetation composition of barren and grass/shrub classes.

In another example, this area, classified as tree cover, with a secondary classification of grass & shrubs, reports high confidence in primary classification, with considerably lower confidence in secondary classification. This indicates the value of secondary land cover classification may be limited depending on the specific application.

Users should carefully evaluate their needs and requirements when deciding on how to utilize these land cover products and their associated confidence values.

The LCMAP Collection 1 Science Products can be accessed through EarthExplorer or the LCMAP Web Viewer.  More in-depth information on all LCMAP Science Products can be found on the LCMAP website.
