Detailed Description

To conduct the science needed to understand coastal and marine geohazards, support habitat and resource management, and monitor how these environments change over time, the USGS Coastal and Marine Hazards and Resources Program relies on engineering, mechanical, and electronics expertise for field operations along the coast, in the nearshore environment, and in the deeper waters of the ocean.

Our field operations staff at the Pacific, St. Petersburg, and Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Centers provide scientists with the support, equipment, and data they need to engage in investigations of our Nations' coasts and offshore environments. They are innovators in mapping technologies, scientific instrument fabrication, laboratory analyses, and more, whose expertise is sought by other governmental agencies, educational institutions, and private companies. They are the unsung heroes of our science-driven mission.

Field operations staff are equipped and ready to take on science questions by building experiment apparatuses; assisting in field missions by operating vessels, vehicles, and specialized equipment; acquiring and processing numerous types of necessary data; and publishing technical data reports that are made available to scientists, the public, and various stakeholders.

Our field operations team comprises a diverse, talented, and passionate group of oceanographers, geologists, engineers, electronics technicians, and Center support staff. Together, they work hard to support the science mission of our Centers, the Program, and the USGS.
