Big Avalanches in a Changing Climate: Snow Avalanche and Climate Relationships Across Multiple Climate Types
Title: Big Avalanches in a Changing Climate: Snow Avalanche and Climate Relationships Across Multiple Climate Types
Speaker: Erich Peitzsch, Research Physical Scientist, USGS Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center
Date: February 10th at 2:00 pm Eastern
Summary: Erich will present work done by the Northern Rocky Mountain Science Center Climate Change in Mountain Ecosystems (CCME) research group examining large magnitude snow avalanche frequency and associations with climate and atmospheric drivers. CCME scientists and their collaborators at Montana State University, University of Alaska, the U.S. Forest Service, and the Colorado Avalanche Information Center used tree-ring records to reconstruct avalanche chronologies in three different climates - maritime (southeast Alaska), intermountain (northern Rockies), and continental (Colorado). Erich will discuss the results of this work and the societal impacts avalanches have on human safety, commerce, and infrastructure as well as the ecological impacts across the landscape.
