SAN FRANCISCO BAY, CA — Audubon magazine interviews USGS WERC wildlife biologist Dr. Alex Hartman on an ongoing effort to attract seabirds to newly-restored habitat in the Bay.

At the request of the Army Corps of Engineers, the USGS Western Ecological Research Center is testing methods for attracting populations of seabirds called Caspian terns (Hydroprogne caspia) to new habitat in San Francisco Bay, CA. One of the methods involves using recordings of Caspian tern calls and "decoy" birds to draw seabirds to fresh habitat. Audubon recently purchased the workshop that produces the decoy birds and quotes USGS WERC wildlife biologist Dr. Alex Hartman, operating under lead scientist Dr. Josh Ackerman, in an online article
