SAFRR Holds User Meetings for National Seismic Hazard Model and Engineering Risk Assessment Projects
Civil Engineer Sean McGowan of the USGS National Seismic Hazard Modeling (NSHM) and Engineering Risk Assessment (ERA) Projects visited Los Angeles and San Diego on June 23-24 to participate in meetings organized by disaster scientist Sue Perry of Science Application for Risk Reduction (SAFRR). Sean demonstrated a USGS web application under development that combines earthquake shaking information from the NSHM Project and user-provided building fragility information to forecast the risk of earthquake-induced damage. He and Sue then solicited feedback from prospective users, including private-sector emergency managers and contingency planners, plus members of the steering committee for the new Building Resilience - Los Angeles Initiative.
