Program coordinators are now accepting applications for the 2018 Appalachian Geoscience GeoCamp.

The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with West Virginia University (WVU) and the West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey (WVGES), is proud to announce the first annual Appalachian Geoscience GeoCamp. This inaugural event is a collaborative geoscience opportunity, open to high school students nationwide, and will be held June 17– 21, 2018, in Morgantown, West Virginia. 

Participating students will learn about local geology through hands-on geoscience activities led by WVU staff and professional research geologists from USGS, WVGES, and the University of Kansas. Camp activities include:

  • “Bio Blitz”: surveying invasive species occurrence through a forest canopy tour
  • Identifying Rock Types: hands-on in Coopers Rock State Forest
  • Geology of Cheat River: all-day rafting trip led by West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey staff
  • GIS Field Mapping: interactive mapping activity while mountain biking through the WVU Research Forest
  • Structure-from-Motion: interactive photogrammetric visualization activity while hiking through Coopers Rock State Forest
  • Geology of Laurel Caverns: caving tour in nearby Laurel Caverns Geological Park

The cost for the camp is $650 per student, plus tax. This covers all meals, housing, activities, and transportation for the duration of the camp. Space is limited – only 24 slots are available.  Details and registration: Appalachian Geoscience GeoCamp.
