Scientists conducted an overflight of the new fissures that opened up on and near the base of the northwest wall of Halemaʻumaʻu crater on September 14-15. New maps and annotated webcam images provide details on this eruptive activity.

The fissure on the left has a circular appearance and initiated shortly before 9 p.m. H.S.T. on September 15. The older fissure on the right, which has cooled lava that flowed out of its northern (right) end, initiated at around 10:20 p.m. HST on September 14. The vent complex built up over the course of the eruption that began on December 23, 2024, is visible on the left; the Pu‘u formed by the accumulation of tephra from lava fountaining over that time is behind and above it and is partially obscured by volcanic gas. This photo, taken during a USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory helicopter overflight on September 16, 2026, shows south vent at the summit of Kīlauea in the bottom center. The caldera floor is towards the top of the photo; the north vent is out of view on the left. There are prominent slickenslides on the right, which are polished striated rock surfaces caused by one rock mass moving across another. In this case, part of the vent area complex slid downhill, exposing underlying rock; the sliding caused the striations. On September 14, new fissures began breaking out along the base of the northwest wall of Halema‘uma‘u crater, north of the episodic lava fountaining vents that have persisted since December 23, 2024, at the summit of Kīlauea. This oblique photo looking north, taken during a USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory overflight on September 16 in the morning, prominently shows the lava flows that have erupted from the new fissures. These young lava flows have a silvery appearance. While lava erupts from the new fissures, north, south, and west vent continue to spatter; north vent is visible in the lower half of the photo on the right. USGS photo by N. Deligne.

This thermal map of the summit of Kīlauea was constructed from images collected during a morning overflight on September 16, 2026. The map shows two small but active flows in the northwest portion of Halema‘uma‘u crater, erupting from new vents that opened in the past two days. The main vent complex (north, south, and west vents) remained active and each had active lava within their vent openings - these vents show as three tiny hotspots in the thermal map. Over the past week, numerous overflows have erupted from the north vent, and these flows are inactive, and show as slightly warm in the thermal map.

This reference map depicts new eruptive vents and lava flows in Halema‘uma‘u crater at the summit of Kīlauea since September 14, 2026. Most of the data for this map were collected during a USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory helicopter overflight on the morning of September 16. Five new vents have been active over the past two days, numbered 1–5 on the inset map to the upper right. The eruptive vents, spatter deposit, and lava flows associated with lava fountaining episodes 1 through 54, beginning December 23, 2024, are also shown. New vent and lava flow statistics through September 16 at 10:45 a.m.: Average vent elevation: 1,055 meters (3,460 feet) above sea level Lava extent: 13 hectares (32 acres) Lava volume (estimated): 0.2 million cubic meters (5.3 million gallons)
