A recent episode of “The Climate Conversation” podcast from the Environmental and Energy Study Institute highlights the collaborative climate adaptation efforts of the South Central CASC in the Red River Basin.

The Red River Basin spans parts of Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisiana, and New Mexico and supports municipal water, agriculture, and ecosystems in the region. Prolonged droughts and extreme floods are limiting the availability of water in the region and posing challenges to water resource managers.  

A September 2023 episode of the podcast “The Climate Conversation” from the Environmental and Energy Study Institute (EESI) highlighted how the South Central CASC is working with partners to address the climate and water challenges in the Red River Basin. Much of the discussion revolved around the importance of data-driven decision making and the potential for innovative policies to enhance climate resilience in vulnerable areas. 

The podcast hosts interviewed South Central CASC collaborators Newakis Weber, a resource manager for the Chickasaw Nation, and Barney Austin, president and CEO of Aqua Strategies, Inc., about the work.  

Among other things, Weber discussed the SC CASC’s relationship with tribes in the region: “I really think this involvement allowed us to have a better understanding of the study as a whole and then relay some of that critical information back to our tribal leadership.” She also explained that the Red River Project led to another CASC-funded project in the Canadian River Basin “Building Tools to Assess Climate Change Impacts on Water Resources of the Canadian River Basin.” 

Austin spoke of the CASC’s emphasis on collaborative work and strong communication. He said, “one of the really nice things about this project, working with the CASC, is that they have an interest and a desire, you know, a scientific hunger to share those results with other people.” 

With support from the South Central CASC, regional managers can now use different localized climate projections to better inform water resource management decisions in the south-central region.
