National Seismic Hazard Model Project Steering Committee
The National Seismic Hazard Model Project (NSHMP) Steering Committee is a panel of nine subject matter experts that meets routinely with the NSHMP to discuss and review inputs to the National Seismic Hazard Models (NSHMs).
The National Seismic Hazard Model Project (NSHMP) Steering Committee is a subcommittee of the Scientific Earthquake Studies Advisory Committee (SESAC) of the U.S. Geological Survey. The NSHMP Steering Committee was established to critique and review updates of the National Seismic Hazard Models (NSHMs) and to provide overall guidance on the efforts of the NSHMP.
The committee consists of nine subject matter experts from academia and industry. The NSHMP Project Chief selects the committee members, with input from the Earthquake Hazards Program (EHP) Coordinator. The members are selected based on their subject matter expertise, with each member representing a unique and critical component to the NSHMs. The 2020 membership is listed below:

SESAC appoints one of the members as the Chair of the Steering Committee, with advice from the Project Chief of the NSHMP. Each member of the Steering Committee is appointed for a 3-year term, and appointments are renewable, as needed. The Steering Committee recommends that there be regular rotations of members to allow for new scientific expertise on the committee. Coordinators (or their representatives) from the EHP, as well as representatives of other agencies in the National Earthquake Hazards Reduction Program (NEHRP) (i.e., FEMA, NSF, and NIST) are ex officio members of the Steering Committee, and are therefore invited and welcomed to join meetings.
The NSHMP Steering Committee generally meets in person one or two times per year, but they also meet in several web conferences throughout the year to discuss specific topics of importance to the NSHMP. Years when a NSHM is close to being finalized and released tend to require more meetings than other years. The Steering Committee is routinely updated on the status of the NSHMs and the science and models being incorporated into the resulting hazard maps. The NSHMP relies on the scientific expertise of the Steering Committee members to review the models and offer guidance to the NSHMP. The Steering Committee is also invited to attend all NSHMP public workshops, where the NSHMP presents draft NSHMs to the public for input and review, as well as participate in the public review period when the draft NSHMs are made publicly available online. The Steering Committee also provides input to the NSHMP and to SESAC about project and research priorities.
