Welcome to the Gap Analysis Project (GAP) Protected Areas Statistics Dashboard.
Administered by the U.S. Geological Survey Gap Analysis Project, the Protected Areas Database of the United States (PAD-US) is the nation’s official inventory of public open space and private protected areas. The lands included in PAD-US are assigned conservation status codes that both denote the level of biodiversity preservation and indicate other natural, recreational and cultural uses. PAD-US also includes the best available aggregation of federal lands data provided by agencies. This tabular dashboard leverages data attributes from the latest PAD-US release to allow users to create an assortment of charts.
Using the Dashboard
Launch the dashboard: https://tableau.usgs.gov/#/views/PADUS_Statistics/Dashboard

Welcome to the PAD-US dashboard. You might already be familiar with the PAD-US viewer, which allows users to view and query the various layers that comprise PAD-US in map format. We are excited to introduce you to the PAD-US dashboard, which is a new addition to the suite of PAD-US tools. This dashboard represents a new way of interacting with PAD-US data by leveraging spatial data from PAD-US into tabular and chart format. It enables users to quickly visualize information from acreage, to ownership and landscape composition in an accessible format at a (coarse) national scale all the way down to a (granular) county scale.
Views
The dashboard is divided into three views that can be accessed using the tabs at the top of the page: Data Resources and Definitions; GAP Status Code Dashboard, and Public Access Category Dashboard.
Filters, Charts and Summary Tables
Five filters are available on the GAP Status Code Dashboard and Public Access Category Dashboard.
The Extent filter allows for a single selection only.
All other filters (State Name, Area Name, Manager Type, and Manage Name) allow for multiple sections.
Selection of any filter impacts the options available in the other filters.
Charts and Summary Tables dynamically update to reflect the data selected in the filters.
GAP Status Codes
GAP Status Code definitions are as follows:
GAP Status Code 1 - An area having permanent protection from conversion of natural land cover and a mandated management plan in operation to maintain a natural state within which disturbance events (of natural type, frequency, intensity, and legacy) are permitted to proceed without interference or are mimicked through management.
GAP Status Code 2 - An area having permanent protection from conversion of natural land cover and a mandated management plan in operation to maintain a primarily natural state, but which may receive uses or management practices that degrade the quality of existing natural communities, including suppression of natural disturbance.
GAP Status Code 3 - An area having permanent protection from conversion of natural land cover for most of the area, but subject to extractive uses of either a broad, low-intensity type (e.g., logging, Off Highway Vehicle recreation) or localized intense type
(e.g., mining). It also confers protection to Federally listed endangered and threatened species throughout the area.
GAP Status Code 4 - There are no known public or private institutional mandates or legally recognized easements or deed restrictions held by the managing entity to prevent conversion of natural habitat types to anthropogenic habitat types. The area generally allows conversion to unnatural land cover throughout or management intent is unknown.
Public Access Categories
The Public Access Category describes the level of public access permitted.
Open - requires no special requirements for public access to the property (may include regular hours of availability);
Restricted - requires a special permit from the owner for access, a registration permit on public land (e.g. self-permitting Wild and Scenic River, backcountry Wilderness registration) or has highly variable times when open to use (e.g. seasonal Wildlife Refuge closure);
Closed - occurs where no public access is allowed (e.g. land bank property, special ecological study areas, military bases, many easements, etc.).
Unknown - is assigned where information is not currently available.
Data Export
Tabular data can be exported from the Public Access Category Dashboard view or the GAP Status Code Dashboard view using the button at the top right corner of the dashboard.
