Factors affecting the spatial distribution of Niangua darters Etheostoma nianguae in streams of the Osage River basin, Missouri, USA
Aquatic ecosystems are rapidly changing, posing challenges for the conservation of threatened and endangered species, such as the Niangua darter Etheostoma nianguae, and highlighting the need to evaluate habitat use at multiple scales. The Niangua darter is a small benthic fish endemic to north-flowing streams of the Osage River basin in south-central Missouri, USA, and is federally threatened due to habitat degradation and fragmentation. Effective conservation of this species requires understanding the environmental conditions where they occur. We examined habitat use of Niangua darters at 3 nested spatial scales: macrohabitats, stream reaches, and watersheds, across 74 stream reaches in the Osage River basin. At both the macrohabitat and reach scale, Niangua darters were more likely to occur in habitats with intermediate depth (mean 41.4 and 38.5 cm, respectively) and moderate water velocities (0.20 and 0.25 m s-1). At the reach scale, mean summer stream temperature (mean = 23.4°C) was positively associated with Niangua darter presence, suggesting increased likelihood of occurrence in warmer streams. At the watershed scale, darters were associated with watersheds underlain by limestone and dolomite bedrock, greater soil infiltration capacity, and greater elevational relief. These characteristics likely promote stable channels with coarse substrates and minimal fine sediment deposition. These results indicate that environmental drivers differ among spatial scales but collectively reinforce the importance of physical habitat stability. As aquatic ecosystems continue to change, conservation strategies that maintain natural flow regimes and prioritize instream and riparian habitat stability and geomorphic integrity will be essential to sustaining Niangua darter populations.
