Ground-water resources of Cambrian and Ordovician carbonate rocks in the valley and ridge physiographic province of Pennsylvania Ground-water resources of Cambrian and Ordovician carbonate rocks in the valley and ridge physiographic province of Pennsylvania
About 43 million gallons per day of ground water was used in 1985 by the 150,000 people living in the 10 valleys of central Pennsylvania that are underlain by Cambrian and Ordovician carbonate rocks. Noticeable effects on water levels from withdrawals occur in the vicinity of the Borough of State College where an average of 8.1 million gallons per day is pumped. The carbonate aquifer...

Open-ocean boundary conditions from interior data: Local and remote forcing of Massachusetts Bay Open-ocean boundary conditions from interior data: Local and remote forcing of Massachusetts Bay
Massachusetts and Cape Cod Bays form a semienclosed coastal basin that opens onto the much larger Gulf of Maine. Subtidal circulation in the bay is driven by local winds and remotely driven flows from the gulf. The local-wind forced flow is estimated with a regional shallow water model driven by wind measurements. The model uses a gravity wave radiation condition along the open-ocean...

Effects of dietary lipid on the hematology of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus Effects of dietary lipid on the hematology of channel catfish, Ictalurus punctatus
Juvenile channel catfish were fed diets containing either soybean oil, menhaden oil, beef tallow, or a combination of these three lipid sources. After 90 days, total erythrocyte, leucocyte, and thrombocyte counts, hematocrit, mean corpuscular volume, plasma recalcification time, erythrocyte osmotic fragility, total serum iron, and iron-binding capacity were measured. Total erythrocyte...

Amplitude blanking in seismic profiles from Lake Baikal Amplitude blanking in seismic profiles from Lake Baikal
Imaging of the deepest sedimentary section in Lake Baikal using multichannel seismic profiling was hampered by amplitude blanking that is regionally extensive, is associated with water depths greater than about 900 m and occurs at sub-bottom depths of 1-2 km in association with the first water-bottom multiple. Application of a powerful multiple suppression technique improved the quality...

Mineral intergrowths replaced by "elbow-twinned" rutile in altered rocks Mineral intergrowths replaced by "elbow-twinned" rutile in altered rocks
Some aggregates of rutile, classically considered to be "elbow" twinned, instead are topotactic replacements of ilmenite or other hexagonal titaniferous precursors. Twinned rutile can be differentiated from the reticulated rutile of topotactic replacements by the angle of prism intersections, junction morphology, and the overall form of the aggregate. In a special case of topotactic...

Seismic velocities for hydrate-bearing sediments using weighted equation Seismic velocities for hydrate-bearing sediments using weighted equation
A weighted equation based on the three-phase time-average and Wood equations is applied to derive a relationship between the compressional wave (P wave) velocity and the amount of hydrates filling the pore space. The proposed theory predicts accurate P wave velocities of marine sediments in the porosity range of 40-80% and provides a practical means of estimating the amount of in situ...

Linear alkylbenzenes as tracers of sewage-sludge-derived inputs of organic matter, PCBs, and PAHs to sediments at the 106-mile deep water disposal site Linear alkylbenzenes as tracers of sewage-sludge-derived inputs of organic matter, PCBs, and PAHs to sediments at the 106-mile deep water disposal site
Linear alkylbenzenes (LABs) are sensitive source-specific tracers of sewage inputs to the marine environment. Because they are highly particle reactive and nonspecifically sorbed to organic matter, LABs are potential tracers of the transport of both sludge-derived organic matter and other low solubility hydrophobic contaminants (e.g., PCBs and PAHs); sediment trap studies at the 106-Mile...

A new Bephratelloides (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) from seeds of Cymbopetalum (Annonaceae) in Mexico A new Bephratelloides (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) from seeds of Cymbopetalum (Annonaceae) in Mexico
Bephratelloides ablusus Grissell and Foster, new species, is described and illustrated based upon specimens that emerged from seeds of Cymbopetalum mayanum (Annonaceae) in southern Mexico. This is the first species of Bephratelloides that is associated with a host other than Annona. Bephratelloides ablusus is compared with its congeners from which it differs in minor character states. Regional cholinesterase activity in white-throated sparrow brain is differentially affected by acephate (Orthene®) Regional cholinesterase activity in white-throated sparrow brain is differentially affected by acephate (Orthene®)
Effects of a 14-day dietary exposure to an organophosphorus pesticide, acephate (acetylphosphoramidothioic acid O,S-dimethyl ester), were determined on cholinesterase activity in three regions (basal ganglia, hippocampus, and hypothalamus) of the white-throated sparrow, Zonotrichia albicollis, brain. All three regions experienced depressed cholinesterase activity between 0.5–2 ppm...

Description of adults, eggshells, nestling, fledgling, and nest of the poo-uli Description of adults, eggshells, nestling, fledgling, and nest of the poo-uli
The Poo-uli (Melamprosops phaeosoma), a Hawaiian honeycreeper discovered on the island of Maui in 1973 and now near extinction, is represented in museums by only two specimens. Based on the first observations of a nesting pair and re-examination of the two specimens, we describe the adult male and female, eggshells, nestling, and fledgling Poo-uli. Poo-uli are sexually monochromatic but...
