Prospects for improving the salt tolerance of forest trees: A review Prospects for improving the salt tolerance of forest trees: A review
Three major themes related to the improvement of salt tolerance in forest tree species are examined. First, evidence demonstrating that substantial intraspecific variation in salt tolerance exists in many species is presented. This evidence is important because it suggests that efforts to improve salt tolerance through conventional plant breeding techniques are justified. Second, the...

A water-renewal system that accurately delivers small volumes of water to exposure chambers A water-renewal system that accurately delivers small volumes of water to exposure chambers
This paper describes a system that can accurately deliver small volumes of water (50 ml per cycle) to eight 300-ml beakers. The system is inexpensive

Herbicides and nitrate in near-surface aquifers in the midcontinental United States, 1991 Herbicides and nitrate in near-surface aquifers in the midcontinental United States, 1991
The occurrence and distribution of selected herbicides, atrazine metabolites, and nitrate were determined for near-surface aquifers (within 50 feet of land surface) in the corn- and soybean-producing region of the midcontinental United States. The study region included all or parts of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South...

Polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in emergent mayflies from the upper Mississippi River Polychlorinated biphenyl congeners in emergent mayflies from the upper Mississippi River
We determined polychlorinated biphenyls (pcbs) in emergent mayflies (hexagenia bilineata) from a 1250-km reach of the upper mississippi river (UMR). Total pcb concentrations (sum of 125 congeners) ranged from 0.21 To 4.1 Mu g/g of dry weight (1.2-29 mu g/g of lipid weight). Concentrations were highest in pools near the twin cities and the quad cities metropolitan areas. Longitudinal...

Lithologic descriptions of two cores and ground-water-quality data from five counties in the northeastern part of the coastal plain of South Carolina, 1988 and 1991 Lithologic descriptions of two cores and ground-water-quality data from five counties in the northeastern part of the coastal plain of South Carolina, 1988 and 1991
This report presents data collected as part of a hydrologic investigation of Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marion, and Marlboro Counties in the northeastern part of the Coastal Plain of South Carolina. These data include lithologic descriptions of sediment recovered from two continuously cored boreholes and water-quality results for samples collected from 17 existing wells. One...

Hydrogeologic characterization of a proposed landfill expansion in Pickens County near Easley, South Carolina Hydrogeologic characterization of a proposed landfill expansion in Pickens County near Easley, South Carolina
This report presents the results of a hydrogeologic study in the Piedmont physiographic province of South Carolina to obtain geologic, hydrologic, and water-quality data from the site of a proposed landfill expansion in Pickens County near Easley, South Carolina. The geology of the study area is typical of the Piedmont region. The unconsolidated regolith on the site is soil and saprolite...

The interactive effects of herbivory and fire on an oligohaline marsh, Little Lake, Louisiana, USA The interactive effects of herbivory and fire on an oligohaline marsh, Little Lake, Louisiana, USA
Herbivory and fire have been shown to affect the structure and composition of marsh communities. Because fire may alter plant species composition and cover, and these alterations may have an effect on herbivore populations or foraging patterns, an interactive effect of herbivory and fire may be expected. In this study, the effects of fire and vertebrate herbivory in a Louisiana...
